Gavin Gregory

UI engineer and web developer

Marin County, California

I build user interfaces for the web and have for about a decade, most of it in TypeScript. Fast, accessible, and pleasant to use is the bar every time.

What I do

Frontend and full-stack-ish engineering, with the UI as home turf. Most of my recent work is in TypeScript with React and Vue, on server-driven frameworks like Next.js and Astro, often on top of a headless CMS. I care about accessibility, performance budgets, and the unglamorous parts of a product that make it feel solid.

Currently

Leading the frontend at seats.aero, the award flight search tool. My consultancy, The Component Studio, is paused while seats.aero has my focus. Outside work I keep a side project or two going each year, mostly around points, travel, and tools for AI agents.

Work I like

How I work

Most of my development runs through AI coding agents. Claude Code is my day-to-day harness, almost always on Claude Opus 5.5, and I use OpenAI's Codex with Sol and Astra for some of my paid work. Skills, both existing ones and ones I write, keep the work consistent and predictable from one session to the next.

Alongside that I run Hermes Agent, Nous Research's open-source agent, on a VPS with Sol 6. It helps manage content and images across my sites and draws on my Obsidian vault as a second brain. I tried Openclaw, Instinct, and Muse before settling on it. Hermes strikes the best balance between ease of use and room to tinker, and it's open source.
